Replacing The Valve Cover Gasket?
Im replacing my valve cover gasket for the first time on my own.
1. Is there anything wrong with using dish soap instead of degreaser. (Extremely low on cash right now...yes THAT low.)
2. Is it a bad idea to use a pliers instead of a torque wrench to remove those bolts.
Yes on both counts. Bad to use dish soap because it just isn't strong enough to cut the automotive type grease build up.
Bad to try to use pliers on a bolt or nut because it will ruin the bolt or nut making it very difficult to remove when needed.
You don't need a torque wrench to remove bolts, just ordinary wrenches.
If you're low on cash, just wait until you can do the job right before causing yourself unnecessary grief.
If you intend to work on your own car, at least get a book on basic maintenance before proceeding. There are a few basic things you need to know that will save you a lot of hassle (and money) in the future.
When maintaining a car, it can easily cost you much more than you'll save if you don't have a rudimentary understanding of how to accomplish what you want to do.
It would be time and money very well spent if you were to take a basic automotive maintenance class at a community college. Most have classes for people who want to do their own basic maintenance.
