torque wrench needle
Question on understanding torque?
So im going to replace my water pump and im reading the repair guide and it says to tighten bolts to 15-22 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm). so my questions are is it 15-22 pounds of torque? cause that doesnt seem to be that much. and if so why does it say ft and lbs? and im not planing on using a torque wrench very much so i was going to buy this cheap one (see link 1). will it do the job good? or the one in link 2. more expensive but seems worth it.

Agree with Bob about a quality Torque wrench being required for doing critical items....
Autozone, etc auto parts will loan you a decent quality Torque wrench for free when you use it on parts purchased there. Along with those big names....sears, cornwell even a good one from Home Depot would be better then not using one at all.
15 Ft-Lbs of torque would be the same as hanging a 15lb weight on the end of a 1 ft long bar (thus why it is called Foot-pounds -of rotational force-)
22 Ft-lbs would be 22 lbs on a 1 ft long bar. (or 11 pounds on a 2 foot long bar).
Although not CRITICAL on a water pump it still has a gasket and either over or under torque is bad for a gasket.
